Preview: This is a continuation of a previous lesson titled THE HERALD. In this we see how these righteous people believed God and accepted His way.

Pre-reading: Luke 1:65-80.

Scripture Reading: Matthew 11:1-6.

Memory Verse: Matthew 11:18.

1. Where did Zacharias go when his course ended? Luke 1:23.
2. Did the promise of the angel begin to be fulfilled? What was the reaction of his wife? Luke 1:24-25.
3. What did they start to name the baby? What did his mother say? Luke 1:59-60.
4. Did the people think that strange? What happened? Luke 1:61-64.
5. What did John say when asked if he were Christ? John 1:19-21.
6. What was his reply when he was questioned further? John 1:22-23.
7. What was his description of himself? John 1:23 & Isaiah 40:3.
Note: It seems by the above statements of John that the Pharisees understood “that prophet” and Christ to be two persons, and they expected Elijah to come in person. On these points, they were mistaken, and because of this and many other reasons, it was easy for them to reject both John and Jesus.
8. Did they question John’s authority to baptize? What was his reply? John 1:24-27.
9. What were some of the comments Jesus made about John? Matthew 11:7-10.
10. How great did Jesus say John was? Matthew 11:11.
11. What happened to the Kingdom of Heaven and when did it begin? Matthew 11:12-13 & Luke 16:16.
12. What else did Jesus say John was? Matthew 11:14-15 & Matthew 17:10-13.
Note: Both Jesus and John preached repentance, “…for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” They both suffered violence as they presented the dispensation of grace.
