Preview: This series of lessons is dedicated as an introduction to Jesus. This is the sixth lesson in a thirteen-part series of lessons on this subject.
Pre-reading: Matthew 17:14-27, Matthew 23:1-13 & Matthew 16:13-19.
Scripture Reading: Matthew 9:1-13.
Memory Verse: Matthew 28:18.
1. According to the foregoing Scripture Reading and Memory Verse, how much power did Jesus have and for what purpose?
Note: God the Father had endowed Him with power over everything in Heaven and earth, for the purpose of redeeming fallen man and restoring him to a right relationship with the Father.
2. What did Jesus command to the family of God when He returned to Heaven? Matthew 28:19-20.
3. Consider the following accounts of His power and authority:
A. The elements and the law of gravity: Matthew 8:23-27 & Matthew 14:22-33.
B. Power over sickness and infirmities: Matthew 8:16-17 & Isaiah 53:4-5.
C. Power over death: Matthew 9:18-19 & Matthew 9:23-26.
D. Power over sin: Matthew 9:1-8.
4. What power did Jesus give to His disciples? Matthew 9:35-38, Matthew 10:1 & Matthew 10:5-8.
5. Where did He say the authority for this ministry comes from? Matthew 10:16-20.
6. What authority did Jesus have to act as Mediator between God the Father and man? Matthew 10:32-40 & Romans 10:6-13.
Note: Jesus acknowledged that His power over all things was invested in Him by His Father. As the moon has no light of its own, but must reflect the light of the sun, Jesus reflected the power of His Father. We are instructed to do the same.
7. What lesson did He teach concerning the Sabbath? Matthew 12:1-13.
Note: Everything that God gave man was for his benefit; therefore, to minister to the needs of man is more important than the letter of the law. The Sabbath was given for man’s good, not to deprive him of his needs.
